Iherir is a valley located in the Tassili n'Ajjer region, known for its unique landscape of cliffs, gueltas (natural pools), and lush oases. It has been a critical refuge for human and animal life over thousands of years, evidenced by its rich collection of prehistoric rock art. The art, found on nearby plateaus like Tadjelahine, dates back to 9,000 BCE and depicts scenes of pastoral life, wildlife, and human figures, offering insights into the region's early Neolithic cultures. Today, Iherir is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also designated as a Ramsar site, recognized for its cultural and ecological importance. The valley is still inhabited by Tuareg communities, who engage in small-scale agriculture and tourism focused on the area's ancient heritage and natural beauty.

    Ecological Refuge

The ecological importance of Iherir, a Ramsar site, is primarily due to its gueltas, natural water sources that create an oasis environment in the heart of the Sahara. These pools support a variety of plant and animal life, including endemic species and migratory birds, making the valley a biodiversity hotspot in an otherwise arid region. The gueltas also sustain local Tuareg communities, who use the water for small-scale agriculture.
